Akram Mahdavi  is another victim of unjust and unequal laws in a country where, for the most part, the legal system considers females only half human, and where women's rights, as well as their cries for help are routinely and systematically ignored, trampled upon, and even ridiculed.

The now 32 year old mother of a girl in her early teens is facing imminent execution for conspiracy to murder.  According to court and other reliable sources, when Akram was 27 years old, she sought the assistance of a young male friend and conspired to murder her then 74 year old husband.  Akram, who suffers from epilepsy among other ailments, had been forced to marry the substantially older man; her own father physically beat her into saying "I do" for a second time.

Akram's first marriage took place when she was only 13 years old (the legal age of marriage for girls in the Islamic Republic of Iran), when she was forced into marrying a man who was 40 years her senior and an abusive drug addict.

Why Is Being A Female A Crime?
Why Do You Believe Being Female Is A Crime?

By Marjan Laghaee

Translation by Lily Mazahery

When the official site of Iran’s Security Force posted an article regarding an unruly boy charged with “endangering public safety,” for which he received the punishment of being paraded around town in women’s clothing, I thought of something that Hashemi Shahroudi (Iran’s head of judiciary) had said – a sentence which has arguably become his most famous expression.  Upon accepting his position as the head of Iran’s chief judge, Mr. Shahroudi proclaimed:  “I have inherited an utter ruin from the previous judiciary.”  And as I read the report of the young boy whose punishment was to be dressed as a woman in public, I could not help but wonder about has actually taken the place of the “ruin” inherited by Mr. Shahroudi, since in order to punish criminals, the very judges whom he overseas, take no issue with insulting 35 million Iranian women who live in this country.

Honor Killing in Iran -- Father Stones 14 Year Old Daughter To Death

The case file of a father who murdered his daughter in an act of “honor killing” with the assistance of another man by stoning her to death, is now under review in Zahedan’s general court.  According to our reporter, a few days ago, a distraught woman, who was crying uncontrollably, contacted the authorities in city of Zahedan, and reported the murder of her daughter.  The woman stated:  “My husband, whose name is Sharif, is a suspicious and cruel man who abused me and my daughter.  He was particularly harsh on Samieh, my 14 year old daughter, until he finally found an excuse to take her out of the house and to am undisclosed locations.  After that, she did not return home, and I did not hear from Samieh.”  The woman went on to explain: “Sharif was suspicious of my daughter and thought that she is having relations with a man.  On several occasions, he threatened to kill her, and, on the day of the [Samieh's disappearance], he was extremely angry and I think that he has somehow harmed my child.”

Kianoosh Sanjari, Leading Iranian Student and Human Rights Activist Joins Amnesty International in Objecting to Torture and Executions in Iran

On Monday, January 14, 2008, Iranians demonstrated in front of the Norwegian parliament in Oslo to protest the Iranian regime's inhumane treatment of student dissidents. The demonstration was coordinated by Kianoosh Sanjari and Amnesty International. They protested against the torture of Iranian students who have been imprisoned and are awaiting their death sentences for voicing their objections to systematic oppression and violation of their most basic human and civil rights.  During this demonstration there were several speeches from Kianoosh Sanjari, a leading human and student rights activist, the representative of Amnesty International, Mahmood Amir Moghaddam (human rights prize winner in Norway) and Jila Hassanpour (Adnan Hassanpour's sister, a journalist who currently is imprisoned and awaits his death sentence in Iran).

Mr. Sanjari's attorney,  human rights and immigration lawyer, Lily Mazahery, praised Mr. Sanjari for his continued commitment and activism on behalf of Iranian students and victims of human rights violations in Iran.   "It is remarkable that there are individuals, such as Kianoosh Sanjari, who are willing to sacrifice so much for their country and their fellow country men and women,” said Mazahery.  “I am extremely proud of the youth of Iran, particularly Kianoosh Sanjari.  Their unwavering willingness to combat unbelievable obstacles in an effort to battle suppression, inequality, lack of freedom, and dictatorship should serve as a truly valuable lesson to each and every one of us, regardless of our cultures, ethnicity, nationality, or socio-economic backgrounds.”
