SIGN PETITION FOR DELARAM ALI, HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER SENTENCED TO IMPRISONMENT
To those who believe in the freedom of humankind ;
In an unprecedented development, an appellate court in Iran sentenced 23 year old women’s rights activist, Delaram Ali, to 2 years and 6 months in jail. Delaram Ali was originally tried on May 29, 2007 for her participation in the June 12, 2006 protest in support of women's rights in Tehran’s Haft-e Tir Square. The peaceful protest was violently broken up by Iranian police. Delaram was severely beaten during this protest, dragged on the ground by several police officers, and was subsequently arrested. She suffered a broken arm as a result of these severe beatings.
Delaram, along with several other women who had been subjected to excessive and violent force by the police during this protest filed formal complaints against the police officials. However, last month, Iran’s judiciary found the police innocent and dismissed all charges against them.
In her original trial, Delaram was sentenced to a 2 years and ten months prison term and 10 lashings. The sentence was later reduced, however, to 2 years and 6 months in a ruling issued by the reviewing court. The courts have contacted Delaram in regards to implementing her sentence by the end of the week. Accordingly, on 10 November 2007, Delaram is required to begin serving her prison term in Iran’s notorious Evin prison.
Delaram , who is now 24 and a newly-wed, is a social worker who worked for women and children in very poor neighborhoods of Tehran. She also worked for several months as an aids worker after the disastrous earthquake in Bam. As a women's rights activist, Delaram has been enthusiastically fighting to change discriminatory laws against women in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Additionally, since the early days of her university studies, she has been an active member of the student movement in Iran.
Therefore, if you believe that we should put an end to the injustices against women, students, and human rights advocates in Iran, and if you agree that Delaram Ali should not be imprisoned for fighting for the rights of all women in Iran, please sign this petition and pass it on to everyone so we can save Delaram from imprisonment.
